뉴욕, 브루클린 출신의 푸에리토 출신의 아프리칸 어메리칸으로 태어난 그는 흑인과 백인 그리고 푸에리토리칸의 혼혈이다..그의 할아버지는 브루클린의 유명한 식당의 수석 웨이터였가 되었을때 무척 영광스럽게 생각을 했었다 한다. 그시절에는 흑인이 할수 있는거라고는 그의 아버지가 일했던 것처럼 웨이터. 엘레베이터보이. 군인 그리고 선원등 뿐이였다 . 음악을 무척 좋아하는 어머니의 아래서 자란 그는 자연스레 엄마가 좋아했던 dinah washington, duke ellington. count basie, frank sinatra등의 영향을 많이 받았다.
jeffery는 맨하탄에 있는 나이트 클럽에서 연주를 하였는데 garland jefferys,라는 그룹을 이때 만들었다. 70년에 그들과 함께 [Grinder's Switch / Featuring Garland Jeffreys]앨범을 발매한다.

73년에는 처음으로 atlantic records에서 처음으로 그의 솔로 앨범이 발매가된다.
atlantic 레코드는 " wild in the streets"라는 45RPM싱글을 발매를 하는데. 이것은 프로그레시브 FM AOR 라디도 방송국에서 방송을 타자 그의 가잘 잘 알려진 곡이 되었다. 이곡은 여러 아티스트들에게 커버가 되기도 하였는데 chis speeding , the circle jerks , british lion등이 노래를 부르기도 하였고. 이곡은 77년도 앨범  [Ghost Writer ]에서도 실려있다.

jeffreys는 빔벤더스의 다큐멘터리영화 soul of a man 에서도 출연을 하였고. 마틴스콜세지의 다큐 영화 " the blues"에서도 나왔다 ( 둘다 봄 ㅡ.ㅡV)

솔로앨범인 이앨범도 솔과 블루스의 그리고 레게 락앤롤의 멋진 혼합인데   dr john이 피아노와 하몬드 오르간, david bromberg가 도보로, 등 언뜻 게스트 뮤지션과 봐도 유명한자들이 많이 참여를 하여 앨범을 빛내주고 . 독특한 그의 목소리와 함께 완성도 높은 앨범이다.
