늪지.. ,,,,,,,,.......포크 중독자.. byrds

자신의 레이블인 빌리지 띵에서 발매를 앤더슨씨의 72년의 작품이다. 또 70년대의 발매된 그의 솔로 앨범 중에서는 마지막 작품이기도 하다. Village Thing 레이블은 74년 Noel Murphy의 앨범을 <murf>를 끝으로 막을 내렸는데, 앤더슨씨는 이후에도 Maggie Holland와 듀오로 Hot Vultures를 결성하여 75년부터 79년까지 꾸준하게 작품 활동을 하였다. 그의 레이블은 문을 닫았지만 활동의 범위를 더욱 넓어졌는데, 영국의 대학교를 타워링 하면서 라이브 공연을 주로 하였고 유럽과 벨기에를 돌면서 많은 공연을 하였다고 한다. 이후 79년에는 잘 알려진 대로 fRoot란 잡지를 발간하였다.

아무튼 Village Thing앨범들은 거의 200 컷 이내로 발매를 하여서 많은 컬렉터들의 표적이 되어왔고 오리지널한 앨범은 아직도 희귀본이라고 하는데 이런 열망들이 거의 시디 재발매로 이루어지는 듯하다.

 

앨범의 커버는 <singer sleeps on blaze rages >라는 앨범의 제목을 상징하듯이  잠을 자고 있는 앤더슨씨를 태

운 커다란 침대가 하늘을 비행하고 있다 그리고 용과 동글동글한 구름들을 배경으로 하고 있는데 앤더슨씨의 71년 작품 <Royal York Crescent>에서도 보았던 용이 여기에서도 또 한번 선보이고 있다. 이 독특한 느낌의 작품은 Rodney Matthews 라는 유명한 일러스트 작가 솜씨로 Village Thing 에 소속이 된 아티스트의  여러작품들을 만들었고  Village Thing의 로고를 제작하기도 하였다. Rodney Matthews씨는  Thin Lizzy, Magnum 와 Rick Wakeman같은 메이져급 아티스트의 앨범의 커버를 만들기도 하였다.빌리지의 로고의 모양은 정말이지 너무 귀여운데 한번 보면 잊기 힘든 “앞 이빨‘를 가지고있다 ㅎㅎ, 이러한 Village Thing의 앨범들은 작품성 있는 커버뿐만 아니라 앨범의 내용 또한 수준작이라서 더욱더 강한 매력을 지니고 있다.

이 앨범은 백커버에서 앤더슨씨가 밝힌 데로 6년만에 mike cooper와 재결합을 하여 탄생이 된 앨범이다. mike cooper씨와는 68년에 Mike Cooper & Ian Anderson 라는 듀오그룹으로 <The Inverted World> 앨범을 발매를 한 바가 있다. 앨범의 뒷면을 보명은 오랫만에 쿠퍼씨와 함께 합작으로 만들어진 이 앨범에 대한 야심찬 의욕이 돋보인다.
  앤더슨씨가 정의하는 이 앨범은 : little rock, some blues roots, bit of silliness, some science- fiction, a touch of folky, and old pop-song and a fairly liberal dose of the doomvoice라고  자기의 음악을 위트를 담아 소개를 하고 있다. 사뭇 친절하다는 생각이 스치기도 하지만 그가 정의하고 그에 의해서 쓰여 지는 몇 개의 단어들이 아마도 이 앨범을 설명하는데 제일 정확하리라고 본다. 자신에 대한 음악은 그것을 만든 작가보다 누가 더 잘 설명할 수 있겠는가? ㅎㅎ

재미있는 것은 본작은 instrumental 곡도 없고 사랑에 관한 노래는 절대 아니라고 강렬하게 이야기 하고 있다 는 것이다. 아마도 앤더슨씨는 이앨범에서는 전작과는 차별화된 새로운 실험적인 시도를 하려고 하고 있는듯이 보인다.그런데 그 실험들을 어떻게 이루었고 어떤 식으로 만들었는지 개개의 곡마다 자신의 느낌과 과정들을 상세하게 적고  있다. 그래서 개인적인 리뷰은 어쩌면 첨언이 될지도 모르겠다는 생각이 든다.
그리고 그에 의해서 쓰여진 곡마다의 생각들을 읽어보고 과연 그가 의도한 바가 무엇인지 생각해 보는것도 이 앨범이 주는 색다른 맛 같다.

02.Marie celeste on down ( anderson)
a song for people who insist on jumping off of things, not recommended for those of a nervous disposition. it was intended to be about the Marie celeste but my imagination failed during the first line.

03. spider john ( peabody)
" Moaning Dave" of Tight Like That wrote this ditty about our mod-sixties folk hero. Seeing an meeting Mr. Koerner on numerous occasion was one of the things that spurred me into being a professional white spade back in them days.

04. a sign of the times ( anderson)
upon examining the finished lyrics i discovered i'd got a instant
rent-a-protest song that you can apply to a multitude of caused ( maybe even what i was writhing about).
Birmingham University sociology student will have a wonderful time

05. paper and smoke ( cooper)
i was very tempted to do eaggerated impressions of famous larry the lamb voice but managed to restrain myself as mike was producing.
he can use the royalties to buy cream bums for annie

i recorded this find english traditional piece once before during a brief session some years back which produced a chaotic and mercifully instantly disappering LPP that i've been keeping quiet about ever since. i get asked for this one quite oftern, so i'm sure the 209 people who actually discoved the first version wan't object, especially as this one's quite different.

02. pretty peggyo ( trad. arr. anderson)
i have to admit that i first learned this epic back in 1963 when i set out to become a teenage idol with such devastating success. i was drunk at the time it got this arrangment ( which explains how maggie's on it)

03. the westenrn winde ( anderson)
a ghost story of sorts

04. out of the side ( anderson)
waltz away to this jolly one about a species of young lady you may have encountered. the people upstairs at 12a used to pound on the ceiling while i practised it but never could get the timing right

05. sherley Temples meets hawkwind ( anderson)
Finishing as we began with a space age op song. possibly since reading " Bill The Glactic Hero" i have experienced some difficulty in taking these space-operas seriously! this should be no.1 on the charts in 2072. and make ma a posthumous fortune ( like all the best pop-stars)
