Karen Dalton - '71 In My Own Time

카렌 달톤의 두번째 앨범. 달톤씨는 체로키 출신의 인디언으로 독특한 색조를 가지고 있는 그녀의 목소리는 빌리 할리데이와 자주 비교가 되곤하는데,  재즈가수의 목소리를 가지고 컨트리 블루스를 노래한 가수이자, 벤조연주자 이다. 얼핏보면 어울릴것 같지 않은 이러한 조합은 그녀만의 매력과 독특함으로 작용하는것같다.

 그녀는 그리니치 빌리지에서 밥 딜런과 같이 cafe ' 뭐'에서 활동을 시작하였다. 딜런 또한 그녀의 독특함에 매료가 되었을텐데 이렇게 표현을 하였다 한다

"My favorite singer in the place was Karen Dalton. Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday's and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed." - Bob Dylan

달톤씨는 또한 딜런과 같이 그리고 뉴욕의 우드스톡에서도 활동을 하였는데, 이앨범은 이곳에 가까운  Albert B. Grossman의 Bearsville Recording Studio에서 녹음을 한것이다.


 커버에서 보이는 길 끝에 자리한 나무판자로 만든집이 Bearsville스튜디오인데  이곳은 우드스톡과 가까운 곳에 있고 또한  Grossman씨가 메니지를 하였던 소속가수 들, 딜런과  The band, 그리고 피터폴 앤 메리, Paul Butterfield 등의 manager이 스튜디오에서 거의 녹음을 하였다.

따뜻함과 정겨운 사운드가 특징적인 이곳은 소속가수들도 거물급이였을뿐 아니라. 연주 하는 뮤지션들의 기량이 출중하여 이곳에서 서포트를 받은 앨범들은 특히 명반들이 많은것 같다. 이앨범을 보더라도 Amos Garrett, Bill Kieth .John Hall, John Simon.등 명연주자들이 참여를 하였다.
또한 딜런의 베이스연주였던 harvey Brooks의 프로듀서와 베이스 연주 . 조플린의 피아노 연주를 하기도 하였던 Richard Bell이 게스트로 참여를 하고 있다.

라이너 노트를  Fred Neil씨가 적었는데

"Karen has been my favorite female vocalist as well as a heavy influence on my own style of singing since the early sixties.

I first picked up on her on night in the village at " Cock and Bull" ( which later became the bitter end). "Blue on the Ceiling ( which is my song) with so much feeling that if she told me. she had Written it herself. i would have believed her.

 After the set Dino valenti took me up to karen's place. later that night we jammed. karen was like a letter from home. Her voice is  unique to describe it would take a poet. All i can say is that she sure can sing the shit out of the blues.

라이너 노트까지 써주는 것을 보아도 그녀에 대한 깊은 애정을 느낄수가 있는것 같다. 나 또한 네일씨의 말에 공감을 하는데 그녀는 시적인 감수성을 가지고 있는 목소리인것 같다.
